The Rec Center is currently closed pending reorganization due to completion of 21st Century Grant cycle completion. As we continue to seek grants to operate our after school program, the county commissioners are working to reopen the rec center. Thank you for your patience!

Kermit ISD After School Program to end August 14 For five years, the Kermit community has had the benefit of KISD's extended day program through the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant awarded by Texas Education Agency (TEA). The extended day program allowed students the opportunity for afterschool enrichment in a variety of activities such as gardening, science club, weight training, academics and sports.

The grant also provided personnel and equipment for the Winkler County Recreation Center which has been operated by the district for the last five years. In addition to extending the school day and the Recreation Center, the 21st Century program enabled the district to offer an all day summer program which has served hundreds of KISD students and parents over the years.

The original 21st Century Grant was awarded on a 5 year cycle which is now at an end. The district applied for another cycle of after school funding; however, due to the limited number of awards and the highly competitive nature of the application process, grant monies were primarily awarded to districts in larger urban areas.

The district plans to continue to pursue funding opportunities for programs such as this. Donna Price, curriculum director for KISD said, "Loosing this program is a blow to the community because parents, students and teachers benefitted from the program; working parents were able to pick-up their children after normal working hours, students gained academic and personal enrichment, and teachers had an additional source of income. All of these things were a help to the Kermit community." The closing of the after school program means that parents who relied on the extra time at school will have to make child care arrangements.
